Experiencing burnout is more common than many people realize. Burnout at work occurs when employees feel immense mental and/or physical exhaustion. This usually results from stressful work projects or strenuous hours at work without adequate breaks. Leaders should prioritize the well-being of their team by combating burnout and preventing burnout from arising. Luckily, leaders can combat this by implementing some of the following into their leadership style:
Build Casual Connections
Teams shouldn’t feel stressed while fulfilling their work duties. Yes, everyone has a job to do and a role to play to maintain a smooth functioning business. However, colleagues and employees are still people who feel emotions and have things going on in their personal lives. Individuals going through personal problems in their household may be more susceptible to work burnout. Thus, leaders should try to build casual connections and a fun work environment. To do this, leaders shouldn’t micromanage and should engage in a more intimate level with their team. One should try to get to know more about their team and the individual lives that make up the unit. Employees will feel as though they have an ally in their leader instead of just a boss.
Prioritize Routine Breaks
Leaders are in charge of constructing a schedule with time management in mind so that projects are completed effectively and efficiently. In creating a solid work schedule, leaders must prioritize routinely breaks and allow their employees enough time to decompress from their assigned work. If an employee is feeling burnout, this exhaustion will show through in the quality of work. Breaks give the team a chance to build their energy and pace themselves better.
Burnout can occur when employees are given responsibilities that are too challenging and lead to emotional exhaustion from feelings of inadequacy. Delegating tasks and projects appropriately is very important because it allows individuals to showcase their specific skills and industry of expertise. This also maintains a high level of motivation within the team. By doing this, everyone is fulfilling their optimal potential, and tasks are completed more thoroughly. Leaders must look at the skills and experience of each employee and assign jobs accordingly. This will take a lot of pressure off of each team member.
